Hello Fellow NEHBA Board Members!
Please join me in welcoming new board members Kim Bartman (Bread & Pickle, Gigi’s, Pat’s Tap), Julene Lind (Nicollet Ace Hardware) and Jessica Reipke (HAUS Salon)!
A goal of the organization is to have a diverse board across business type, geography, ethnicity and gender. With your election to the board we are making good progress toward that goal while adding a wealth of business expertise vital to an effective organization.
You are joining a solid group of veterans on the board including Thor Anderson (Saving Tape), Vice-President Mark Brandow (Quality Coaches Auto Repair), Erik Brown (Erik Brown Homes), John Huhn (Walker Methodist), Brenda Johnson (Johnson Design + etc), Steve Williams (Bobby and Steve’s Auto World), and Treasurer Roger Worm (RWS, Inc.).
NEHBA is one of the largest business associations outside of the downtown district. Marketing, communication and supporting businesses through Nicollet and Lyndale road construction projects will be key elements to our work in 2012.
The Board meets once per month. At our first meeting to be held Wednesday, February 8 (location TBD) I would like to review and approve the 2012 organization goals and budget.
This is going to be an exciting and pivotal year for the organization and the businesses we serve. I am looking forward to working with each of you as NEHBA helps make the Minneapolis a more business-friendly city and raises customer awareness of the breadth and depth of products and services available in our area.
With warm regards,
Matt Perry, NEHBA President

Façade Improvement Matching Grant Program
Neighborhood business districts are the front door of our neighborhoods. A welcoming, vibrant business district sends a powerful, positive message, just as a poorly maintained or vacant row of storefronts conveys a negative impression. The program is successful. From 2008-2010, the Great Streets façade program stimulated $1,026,594 of private investment and $499,197 of public investment in 140 façade improvement projects citywide. To learn more, click here.
New Ordinance Requires Minneapolis Businesses to Offer Recycling
Most Minneapolis businesses already recycle, but a new ordinance requires all businesses in Minneapolis to offer recycling. This expands the same recycling requirement that’s already in place for all residential property. For businesses that don’t already offer recycling, resources are available to help them set up a new system.
The ordinance puts in place the requirement that all nonresidential properties in Minneapolis that have garbage service will also have recycling service. “Throwing away” trash is expensive. Recycling takes two expensive problems – managing garbage and generating new material – and turns them into each other’s solutions.
To help ensure that every property owner is able to offer recycling and comply with the new ordinance, Minneapolis is working with Hennepin County to provide information and technical assistance to those who need it.
Under the new ordinance, businesses are required to provide:
- Regular recycling collection (at least twice a month) for all materials generated onsite deemed recyclable in Minneapolis, including paper, cardboard, metal cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles and jars.
- Recycling containers.
- Recycling collection and storage areas.
- Written recycling information and instructions sent to tenants and/or employees annually or posted.
- A written recycling plan. It can simply list where on the premises you collect recycling and which recycling company you use. See template for guidance.
Property owners can find a simple, step-by-step guide to setting up a new recycling system by clicking here. Hennepin County also provides technical assistance and education resources at www.hennepin.us/businesswaste. Property owners with questions about this new recycling requirement can call the City of Minneapolis at 311 or (612) 673-3000.

Nice Ride Workshops
Nice Ride Minnesota launched the largest public bike share in America. As they approach the 100,000-ride milestone and the close of the first season, Nice Ride is planning a major expansion!
In addition to the six stations being planned for North Minneapolis, Nice Rides has much bigger plans for neighborhoods on all sides of downtown Minneapolis, downtown St. Paul and the Grand Ave/University Ave corridor.
Next, Nice Ride will be holding workshops so you can show them where you want a Nice Ride station in your neighborhood. |
